The hamburger you buy, those new jeans, a car: all products are preceded by major logistical processes. The complexity of these relationships between manufacturing, warehousing and distribution demand intelligent networks. Interested in being part of the logistical hotspot in Europe? As a Logistics Engineering student, you learn to evaluate logistical processes and come up with process designs and improvements to implement these.

About

As a Logistics Engineering student, you’ll learn to manage the movement of products through smart process design, operations optimisation and data analytics. You’ll work on projects with industry partners, supported by lectures and workshops. Important topics are evaluating processes and creating process designs, and you’ll learn about data simulation, IT programming and smart warehousing. Engagement in project work will allow you to develop your skills in teamwork, communication and leadership. Company visits, lectures from industry experts and two internships provide you with insights of the real-life work environment.

How does your week look?

Each week has two project days which are structurally planned for you. You’ll either spend the days on campus or within the company you’re doing the project for. Aside from the project days, 2-3 days of the week will be dedicated to following lectures. Each week, you’ll have approximately 25 hours of following lectures or working with your project group. Another 15 hours per week consist of self-study, which includes homework assignments, preparing for lectures and studying for exams.

Each semester has 3-4 individual exams. For the semester project, reports and presentations have to be delivered together with your group. Retakes of the exams and for the projects are offered in the same period.

Courses

Below you can find the description of the study programme per year. If you wish to take a more detailed look at the courses that we have on offer, it is possible to download the course description.

Students of Logistics Management and Logistics Engineering follow a joint programme during the first three semesters. During this time, students are taught the basics of logistics, economics, statistical models and project management. Every semester is dedicated to a topic: (1) Warehousing and Materials Handling, (2) Distribution. (3) Production and (4) Integrated Logistics. Each semester focuses on a project dedicated to the semester topic. Additionally, you’ll get a feeling of what the main tasks of a logistician are through company visits, and what it means to be part of the Supply Chain.

We’ll provide you with general business knowledge and relevant soft skills such as professionalism, teamwork, self-reflection, and communication that you will need in your future job. At this study programme, we will also focus on human leadership, ethics, rights, implementing processes, and of course purchasing and sales.

In the second academic year, you’ll deepen and expand on your knowledge. After the third semester, you’ll choose to specialise in either Logistics Management or Logistics Engineering. In Logistics Engineering, you’ll now focus on topics such as data science, demand prediction and statistical models in order to enhance your logistic processes. This is called operations management. Your priority is to improve the logistic performance through lowering costs or increase customer service level.

In your second year you will get courses like production and integral logistics. The focus will be on (among other things) big data, simulation and data science.

In the first semester of year three, you’ll do an internship in a company and industry of your choice. In the second semester, you deepen or broaden your knowledge in a specific theme in a minor programme. The minor programme provides you with the opportunity to acquire knowledge in a different field than your major or chose topics such as Customs Management or E-Commerce to expand your knowledge in Logistics. You can choose to do this minor at Fontys, at one of our partner universities in the Netherlands, or at one of our 125 partner universities abroad.

The first semester of your final year is your last semester on campus. During this semester, the main focus of your classes and projects is on the field of Supply Chain Management. In Logistics Engineering, you deepen your analytical knowledge in data and process mining and other quantitative analysis tools. You study how to build predictive models and extract information form large databases, all with the goal to enable intelligent decision making.

In the final semester, you’ll do another internship work placement for 5 months and help a company to find a smart solution to their problem. You report the solutions to this practical problem in your final product: the graduation report.

The tuition fees indicator helps you to determine the tuition rate for your situation. The information and tuition rates from this indicator are without engagement.

Statutory tuition fees and institutional tuition fees

A distinction is made between statutory tuition fees and institutional tuition fees. Only if you satisfy all statutory requirements regarding your nationality and if you have not yet been awarded a degree, will you be eligible for statutory tuition fees. Via the tuition fees indicator, you can secure an indication of the type of tuition fees that will be applicable in your situation. To do so, please make use of the indicator above.

Distinctions are made between the following types of Institutional Tuition Fees:

        • Low institutional tuition fees
        • High institutional tuition fees

Different types of tuition fees and Exemption Regulations

These different types of tuition fees and the Exemption Regulations are fully detailed in the:

The amount to be paid may vary in accordance with the following situations:

            • If you have enrolled in more than one course programme (at Fontys and/or elsewhere), it is possible that you may only be obliged to pay one set of statutory tuition fees.
            • If you believe that you may be eligible to pay only the statutory tuition fees on the basis of information that may be unknown to us, please report this to your Course Department.
            • If it later transpires that you do not meet the requirements for statutory tuition fees, you will be obliged to pay the (higher) institutional tuition fees and if this is the case, you will be notified accordingly.

Some Fontys study programmes offer the NL scholarship to their students. Check out the link to see if this study programme participates and for more information.

You might also be eligible for other scholarships not provided by Fontys. These can be found on the Study in NL website.

            Paying in instalments

Collection will occur in a maximum of ten equal instalments on or around the 26th of the month. Depending upon the processing time required after your enrolment, the direct debit may need to be moved to the following month. If so, the amount outstanding will then be divided and added to the remaining instalments to be executed until and including the June instalment.

If paying the full sum in a single payment

If you commence your studies on 1 September, the direct debit pertaining to your Tuition Fees will be executed on or around 25 September. If you commence your studies after 1 September, the direct debit will be executed on or around the 26th of the month in which you commence your studies.

            Non-EU students

Incoming non-EU students will receive a payment letter from their study department, which must be paid before the deadline. In the following academic years, payment can be made by direct debit.

            Non-SEPA

If you have a Bank account number of which the bank is not situated in one of the SEPA countries, and you are a national of a country outside the EEA without an address in The Netherlands, then you will receive a payment letter from Fontys via your course department.

Dutch Immigration Service (IND) requires non-EEA students to proof they have access to € 14.641 per year (€ 7.320 per semester)

Costs within the first months upon arrival will be higher than all other months due to a housing deposit, intro week and books. Study books are usually bought at the start of the semester and therefore it is wise to reserve and have direct access to an amount at the start of the semester which can cover the price of all study books and the living expenses for the first two months.

Before starting your study at Fontys, you must find suitable housing. Unfortunately, it is not easy for international students to find accommodation in the Netherlands due to the housing crisis. Start your accommodation search early. Please be aware that finding a place to live is your own responsibility. However, we are happy to assist in any way we can.
