Fontys School of Sport Studies is part of Fontys University of Applied Sciences. Fontys accommodates over 40.000 students and about 4.000 staff members; the largest university of applied sciences in the south of the Netherlands (main branches are located in Venlo, Eindhoven and Tilburg). Fontys School of Sport Studies is located in Eindhoven.

At Fontys School of Sport Studies you are given the opportunity to experience the Dutch school system first-hand by taking part in our regular classes in which discussions are held on the different educational systems in the Netherlands and abroad and possible goals of Physical Education in your home country. These classes allow you to develop a clear vision of Physical Education and an (international) curriculum.

On top of the classes you follow, we offer the chance to go on an educational internship in Dutch schools for secondary (bilingual) education. You will be placed with two other Dutch students in a school located in Eindhoven, where you will provide PE classes for two days a week for a period of eight weeks. You will be teaching a maximum of twelve PE classes per week as well as visiting other school types (primary, secondary, vocational) in and around Eindhoven to learn about the different type of educational systems, methodologies and learning objectives.

Please note that we have a limited number of internship places available which means we can only accept eight incoming students. Students from the European Union, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Turkey doing this 60-day PE Internship may be eligible for Erasmus Study Grants. Please refer to the International Exchange Officer at your home university for further information.

On 21 October your programme will kick off with an introduction week in which you get acquainted with the Dutch culture, the educational system and the PE vision in the Netherlands. You will also visit your internship school and meet your two Dutch internship buddies who will look after you during your stay with us. After this one week introduction you will feel right at home.

During the remainder of the programme (seven weeks) you will attend classes and workshops to further develop your knowledge on PE and curricula. Together with Dutch and international students you will be creating and developing a high quality sustainable PE curriculum.

Taking back credits to your home university – will these be recognised?

In order to receive credits to take back to your home university, you will have to round off your courses in a satisfactory way. The grading system in the Netherlands can be different from the one you are used to. The lowest grade is 1 and the highest grade is 10. The lowest pass grade is 5,5. Fontys School of Sport Studies will provide you with a transcript of records, which will specify your obtained results. The maximum number of credits to achieve is 12. These ECTs are recognised throughout Europe and, possibly with extra required documentation, in most countries in the world.

The agreement between your home university and Fontys University of Applied Sciences includes a paragraph which states that obtained credits are officially recognised and transferred into records and grading system by your home university.

How to apply as an exchange student

Applications should always be submitted via the International Exchange (or Erasmus) Officer at the home university. This officer will send your application request (nomination) to Fontys. Once Fontys has accepted the application, your Fontys study department will send you a form or a link to a web application to further complete the process. You will then also receive all other necessary information for your stay with us.
