Electrical and Electronic Engineering S7- Embedded Systems - Fall semester (Eindhoven)

Are you interested in integrating software with hardware to create innovative solutions and technologies? At Embedded Systems, you'll gain hands-on experience in a dynamic setting, work on real-world projects, and advance your skills alongside international peers and expert faculty.

About the exchange programme

The Engineering minor is a programme we offer to engineering students to widen their scope with several courses in the field of engineering, where the emphasis lies on developing knowledge and skills to design, build and sell an engineering product. Theory, practice and project work are alternated. Fontys is a University of Applied Sciences and therefore has a strong focus on hands on experience. Besides the practical aspects as part of the courses, the exchange programme is complemented with a mandatory project of 10 ECTS, where multidisplinary collaboration, communication and hands on experience on real-life problems are essential. Incoming exchange students will be mixed with our regular third year students.

Why this programme?

  • Experience a project-based approach that simulates real-world engineering challenges, enhancing your practical skills in a global setting.
  • Benefit from direct interaction with experienced faculty and access to advanced technological facilities at Fontys.
  • Study in Eindhoven, a renowned hub for high-tech innovation, offering unique networking and career opportunities in the tech industry.

Content of the programme

The exchange program is an advanced program in the field of electrical and electronic engineering. This program is designed to address the entire design challenge of embedded systems. The two mandatory courses for the Embedded Systems differentiation together with the two generic courses will give the students a solid software-focused design platform. The course work is deepened by a design project, where the knowledge and skills are put to use in the design of a prototype electronic system that addresses a real life challenge. Students choosing this differentiation will also be exposed to the field of processing architectures for electronic products covering embedded software, parallel processing, microcontrollers, as well as System on Chip (SoC). The students will learn how to:

  • Specify, design, implement, and verify a system for a real life challenge.
  • Predict and manage system behaviour, from physical inputs through to software responses.
  • Put wireless smart nodes, containing embedded systems, into a manageable relationship with a global network, such as the Internet, and provide power efficient solutions for these nodes.
  • Manage embedded systems in an IoT context, where the communications protocol, their functions, and interfaces may change depending on use case.
  • Self-learning in a multi-disciplinary knowledgebase.
  • Design user friendly and reliable smart and sustainable systems that measurably enhance the quality and richness of the user’s life..

The programme must include the project as it is essential to the way Fontys Engineering offers education. The student can choose among the other courses in line with his or her interest to complete the full program up to 30 ECTS.

Admission requirements

This programme has been designed for Bachelor students who have completed at least three years (6 semesters) of Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or an equivalent.

How to apply as an exchange student

Applications should always be submitted via the International Exchange (or Erasmus) Officer at the home university. If several versions of the programme are offered, please indicate for which version you would like to apply to (Programme I, Programme II, Programme III, etc.) This officer will send your application request (nomination) to Fontys. Once Fontys has accepted the application, your Fontys study department will send you a link to a web application called Mobility Online.

Deadline for application

Fall semester: 15 May
Spring semester: 15 November

Note: Not all exchange programmes are available every semester. To find out when this programme is offered, please check its specific details.

How will your course programme be recognised by your home university?

Fontys will provide you with a so-called ‘Transcript of Records’, which will clarify the results that you have achieved. Depending on your results, you will receive a maximum of 30 ECTS credits. ECTS credits are recognised throughout Europe. The agreement between your home university and Fontys University of Applied Sciences will usually include a condition whereby the credits that you obtain will be recognised and transferred into the records kept by your home university.
