Introduction

The development of more complex products is a multidisciplinary activity in which all aspects of the entire lifecycle of the product need to be considered, including marketing, user centred aspects, integration of systems, design for manufacture, end of life processing etc. Multidisciplinary teams consisting of people with different backgrounds and nationalities each with their own specialization and priorities, (e.g. marketing people, industrial designers, engineers, mechatronics-engineers, researchers). work together to create a successful product. The project is the core of this programme. Theoretic modules support the core. The programme contains one compulsory module (the project) and ‘self select modules’, offered to enable students to specialize in Engineering (e.g. Solidworks Motion,) or in Industrial Design (e.g. Web design, Digital sketching, Advanced Product Photography). Self select modules give students the opportunity to create a course which best suits his/hers interests and experience.

Summary

The Design for Engineers programme gives the students an opportunity to experience complex product development in multidisciplinary teams. Collaboration with (foreign) students and communication with group members play an important role. Students as a group (i.e. bringing own expertise and expertise of other group members deliver the best possible solutions during product development cycle. The purpose of the programme is to gain a thorough multidisciplinary helicopter view of the product renewal- or innovation cycle.

Goals

  • Students gain a thorough multidisciplinary helicopter view of the product renewal- or innovation cycle;
  • Student learn to communicate and collaborate with students from different courses and nationalities;
  • Students develop a professional attitude towards the companies involved in the projects;
  • Students learn to communicate (write, speak, present and listen) in English;
  • Students gain knowledge on projectplanning, projectbudget and project- and bussinessmanagement;
  • Students learn how to use set up a basic applied research, how to use research tools;
  • Students will learn the basic knowledge on intellectual property and how to use the patent-database;
  • Students will learn gain knowledge on materials, productionmethods and sustainability, which could be applied in the project
  • Students develop an own expertise based on the courses they select (see self select modules).

    Content of the programme

    The total workload for this programme is 30 European Credits, duration is 1 semester. All courses have to be taken in order to achieve the full credits. The following minor parts (courses) have been defined:

    The project element aims to provide an experience of multi-disciplinary integration within a complex design project. In the project students will have the opportunity to:

    • Gain experience of the complexities of multi and interdisciplinary working;
    • Broaden their knowledge of disciplines on the periphery of their main study;
    • Gain or further their experience of generating and developing conceptual ideas;
    • Analyse and evaluate design concepts against established criteria;
    • Work as part of an integrated team developing a complex product to a working prototype stage;
    • Define product specifications based on user and situation analysis;
    • Develop product design solutions meeting established performance criteria;
    • Research and evaluate a relevant study topic.

    Admission requirements

    For this exchange programme we have the following admission requirements:

    • English level: equivalent to IELTS 6.0;
    • Foundation year should be rounded off and preferably affinity with engineering.

    Fontys way of studying

    At Fontys you will study in various ways. There are tutorials and lectures in classrooms with about 25 other students. In these sessions you will work in small groups or independently and depending on course choices, within a project team on your assignments. The campus offers a wide array of facilities to study alone or with a group. Here at Fontys, we believe that collaborative learning stimulates a hands on, independent way of working. At Fontys we believe in interaction. We like it when you ask questions during lectures and also outside lectures we are there for you.

    Recognition

    How will your course programme be recognised by your home university?

    Fontys will provide you with a so-called ‘Transcript of Records’, which will clarify the results that you have achieved. Depending on your results, you will receive a maximum of 30 ECTS credits. ECTS credits are recognised throughout Europe. The agreement between your home university and Fontys University of Applied Sciences will usually include a condition whereby the credits that you obtain will be recognised and transferred into the records kept by your home university.
