Programme in brief
This exchange programme offers a specialisation programme in Software Engineering. It’s actually the fourth semester of an Informatics bachelor programme which allows to specialize in business informatics, tackling the following topics: Business processes and business process modelling, business intelligence, data warehouses, and accounting or development processes / agile development. The project of that semester is about developing an app (for iOS or Android or hybrid platform) smartphones with a Cloud architecture.
What to expect from us
The semester consists of 4 modules, mostly with theory lectures as well as practical work sessions, and 1 project in which students work together in groups. Educational activities will take place interactively in small classes, together with Dutch, German and other international students.
What do we expect from you?
Foreknowledge in the IT domain is needed, you at least have finished the first year of an IT bachelor programme or have comparable experience. Furthermore, interest in the IT discipline and an active and eager-to-learn attitude is all we expect.
* This programme is only offered in the spring semester.
The total workload for this programme is 30 European Credits, duration is 1 semester. All courses have to be taken in order to achieve the full credits. The following minor parts (courses) have been defined:

In case students are familiar with some of the mentioned topics, some modules can possibly be interchanged by modules from another semester.
ACCO - Accounting - 5 EC
For a business informatics student it is important to gain knowledge of financial accounting and management accounting as a basic element of the functioning of a company. At the end of this module, basic financial statements like income statement, cash flow statement and statement of financial position are known and can be analysed/interpreted by the student. For the management of accounting, students will learn how to do cost-volume profit analysis and full-costing profit analysis. Students learn to discuss the importance of finance to IT and apply important financial techniques.
BUPR - Business Processes - 5 EC
Business processes play an important role for information systems: Information systems are made to support or even improve business processes. In the module BUPR, students will learn the basic concepts, languages and architectures for modelling business processes and will understand the task and relevance of business process management. They will gain insight into key business processes within organizations and the complexity of ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems supporting these business processes. For the practical part, students will have to model a business process themselves, using the tools/techniques ARIS/EPC and BPMN.
BUIN - Business Intelligence - 5 EC
Big Data is no longer just a buzz word. All over the world more and more data is gathered and stored. Analysing this data and deriving information from it is getting more and more possible, valuable and even a need. Business Intelligence is the module that rests on knowledge about Databases and Data Warehouses, and feeds into modules on Machine Learning (Data Mining). The module BUIN covers data science, exploratory data analysis, and visualization. Current tools and techniques like R will be used.
DATW - Data Warehouses - 5 EC
For the decision process in companies it is of essential importance to have an integrated view on all data which are relevant for the decisions. Classical database systems cannot deliver this information, or can only deliver it with unreasonable effort. A data warehouse system is a company wide information system which offers such an integration including possibilities for data analysis on top. During the course DATW, the architecture of data warehouses, relevant technologies and tools for design and development of a data warehouse and the analysis of the available data are studied in detail.
PRJ4 – App Development - 10 EC
Mobile App Development is still in development, as is IT in general. Fact is, that it is a very important application area. The mobile apps development world is divided into different technologies. The most important technologies are ios, android, hybrid and html/css/javascript. Because the server centered software development is already covered by other courses, we have chosen for the device centered and platform dependent major technologies: ios and android.
Admission requirements
For this exchange programme we have the following admission requirements:
- English level: equivalent to IELTS 6.0;
- Intermediate level of IT knowledge is required. The level of this programme is advanced.
Fontys way of studying
At Fontys you will study in various ways. There are tutorials and lectures in classrooms with about 25 other students. In these sessions you will work in small groups or independently and depending on course choices, within a project team on your assignments. The campus offers a wide array of facilities to study alone or with a group. Here at Fontys, we believe that collaborative learning stimulates a hands on, independent way of working. At Fontys we believe in interaction. We like it when you ask questions during lectures and also outside lectures we are there for you.
Recognition
How will your course programme be recognised by your home university?
Fontys will provide you with a so-called ‘Transcript of Records’, which will clarify the results that you have achieved. Depending on your results, you will receive a maximum of 30 ECTS credits. ECTS credits are recognised throughout Europe. The agreement between your home university and Fontys University of Applied Sciences will usually include a condition whereby the credits that you obtain will be recognised and transferred into the records kept by your home university.
