What is FECT?

Working together to create a healthy world
We live in a world in which natural resources are becoming ever scarcer, while the number of people occupying the planet is constantly growing. All these changes elicit a direct response from nature.
Energy transition
The combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas and the linear production and transport of consumer goods result in CO2 emission, which is a major contributing factor to climate change. The Earth is becoming warmer. If we want our children and grandchildren to be able to enjoy life on a healthy planet, then we must make the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and geothermal energy. At the FECT we are investigating how we can make the transition to fully renewable energy supply.
Circular economy
In our current economy, we convert raw materials into products, and simply dump the waste substances in a giant heap. By contrast, in the circular economy, we create a never-ending process in which few if any raw materials are lost. One business’ waste is the raw material for another. Nature is a key source of inspiration for the circular economy. Take for example the way in which dead leaves that fall to the ground feed the soil from which trees then extract the nutrients for their continued growth. In a never-ending circle.
Two in one
At our centre of expertise, we focus on the relationship between the circular economy and the energy transition. It is in fact a single transition, from linear fossil to circular renewable, that generates massive technical, economic and social and societal impact. By considering these two aspects as a single challenge and by making smart combinations and collaborative partnerships, the economy and society can both benefit.
