Opening a bank account
We recommend you to open a Dutch bank account because of the cost perspective and because it is much more convenient.
Upon arrival we will inform you about the possibilities per email.
A list of the required documents can be found below:
- A valid passport
- Proof of enrolment at Fontys Venlo University of Applied Sciences
- A BSN (burgerservicenummer) i.e. the Dutch social service number. You will receive this number via post within two weeks after your city hall appointment
- An activated Dutch SIM card. You need a Dutch SIM card to activate your account and internet banking. You can buy a Dutch SIM card at Checkpoint, in any supermarket or telephone shop. Be sure to have the SIM card installed and activated before going to the bank.
- When you are younger than 18 years then your parents need to provide an authorisation (in English) to open the bank account
Opening a Dutch bank account may in some cases (e.g. underage applicant) take up to one month. This means, that you must have sufficient funds in cash or on a foreign debit/credit card to finance yourself during this time. Please check with your bank whether your card can be used in the Netherlands before your departure!
