Opening a Dutch Bank Account
A bank account helps you with your financial needs in The Netherlands during your stay. It is advised to open a Dutch bank account.
Opening a Dutch bank account
We recommend students to open a bank account with ABN AMRO bank. To open a bank account you are required to bring the following documents: Fontys admission letter, Passport, Dutch address, Social security number (BSN). You need to make an appointment with the bank via e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org. The address of the ABN AMRO bank is: Heuvelring 88 5038 CL Tilburg. After opening a bank account you will get your pass directly. With a Dutch bank account you can easily use internet banking, for example to pay for the rent of the student room. Moreover, several shops in the Netherlands do not accept MasterCard or visa-cards, but only maestro-cards. Keep this in mind when arriving in the Netherlands.
Managing your finances
Not all Automatic Teller Machines (ATM’s) accept bankcards from other countries and, due to occasional computer problems, you may not always be able to withdraw money from your bank account at home. Therefore, it is a good idea not to rely on being able to use your home bank account at all times and to open a Dutch bank account, particularly if you are planning to stay in Holland for any longer than five or six months.
