Going Abroad: Preparations

Yes! You have registered for a minor Study Abroad or you are planning to do an internship abroad! Studying abroad is a lifelong dream for many students and a great way to further develop your (international/intercultural) skills. We would like to give you some guidelines to make sure you are as prepared as possible.

On this page you will find a summary of Fontys’ policy regarding international mobility and what to expect in the months leading up to your travels abroad. At the bottom of this page you can download a document that includes all information in detail.

Do you still have questions after reading the information? Please contact Team Study Abroad or your coordinator Internationalisation!

Travel advice: GO or NO-GO

In order to determine whether you are allowed to travel, Fontys uses the travel code from the website of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The colour codes represent as well the safety and health risks in a country or area.

Green / yellow = GO: Students are allowed to travel to this country, region or city but are required to fill out a risk analysis form (see your workflow in Mobility Online)

Orange / red = NO-GO: Students will not get permission from Fontys to travel to this country, region or city. Fontys strongly advises you not to travel to this country, region or city.

The colour code on the day of departure is the final go/nogo for your travels. Please be aware changes to entry rules for a country can be put in place at any time since situations can change very rapidly. This means it is best to check the colour code regularly.

Practical matters

Travelling abroad times comes with additional challanges. Make sure you inform yourself well about the consequences of the current situation on the financial risks, insurance, visa procedures and travel arrangements.

Please note that at all times you will have to follow the Dutch rules ánd the rules of the country you are visiting .

Be prepared: your plan B

We advise students who plan to study or do an internship abroad to prepare for a plan B in case traveling abroad will not be possible at the time of departure.
Your plan B can e.g. be an alternative minor, at Fontys or another university in The Netherlands, an internship position in The Netherlands or switching your semester for internship and the minor.

You can contact your coordinator Internationalisation or study councillor to discuss your options for your plan B.
