"The MSc was partially in Plymouth, UK. This provided benefits in both my professional life as my personal life."

How did your study programme at Fontys prepare you for your future career? What knowledge and skills did you learn during your Bachelor that are really useful to you now?

The MSc in Internal Supply Chain Management provided a backpack with a wide variety of Supply chain Management knowledge. During the start of my career it ensured that I could oversee the whole picture. Rather than only looking at the job that had to be done, I could put the tasks into perspective of the whole Supply chain. This ensured I received positive feedback and was quickly promoted.
In my current position I am engaged at a higher level in the supply chain. This is where I am really using the knowledge from my "backpack". The MSc helped me to now quickly view the correlations and interdependencies in the supply chain.
At the same time it gives me enough detailed knowledge on the different fields to properly manage experts, as I do not have to know what they know, but I do need to be able to understand them.

Why did you decide to study in the Netherlands and what is the advantage of a degree at Fontys in comparison to a degree in your home country?

For me the Netherlands is home. The MSc was partially in Plymouth, UK. This provided benefits in both my professional life as my personal life. Professionally it prepared me for working with different cultures and shared insight into diversity. While personally you are on your own together with fellow students, which is a completely different environment than being close to home.

How did your career look up till now?

In 2009 I worked for 1 year at a Pharmaceutical company, where I decided I wanted to focus on logistics. Since then I work for UPS Supply Chain Solutions where I was promoted 4 times through the following roles: Inventory Controller - Project Analyst - Senior Project Analyst - Supervisor - Manager. As a manager I currently oversee a team of 16 persons that works on changes, improvements and innovations in post sales logistics at UPS.
In addition we ensure the systems to support the Supply Chain are updated accordingly. My team and I are mainly coordinating all of these items and hence engaged with all teams, for example - Operations / IT / Industrial engineering / Transport / etc.

Do you have tips/suggestions for potential students?

Make sure you complete your study and do not swap studies. Your study provides you with a good backpack that is important. I often hire new persons. From a professional point of view, it is important that you have completed your study and make decisions with good arguments. Swapping studies often gives the impression that you might not be in my company for a long time, while as UPS we believe in promoting from within.

    Anything you want to add?

Enjoy your time as a student!

"After looking around for a masters program, I came across this program at Fontys and I instantly got excited about the opportunity to do half of the study in Venlo and the other half in Plymouth."

Hello, my name is Ilse Parren, 23 years old and currently working as a material planner at DAF Trucks N.V.

After graduating from my bachelor in International Business, I felt the need to study further and specialize in a more specific field. I knew I wanted to do a masters related to logistics/supply chain management and started searching for optional programs. After looking around for a bit, I came across this program at Fontys and I instantly got excited about the opportunity to do half of the study in Venlo and the other half in Plymouth.

Because I got so excited, I decided to visit the soonest Open Day available to gather some more information about the program. After this day, I was certain I wanted to start this study.

The nice part of the study is that it is really internationally oriented. Students from all over the world together in one classroom is quite an unique experience. The atmosphere among the students is therefore also really good; nobody really knows each other and everyone is new in the situation. Luckily, also the lectures understand the fact that they are teaching a class full of students with all sorts of nationalities and cultures and try to help everyone as good as possible.

During the study program, a wide range of teaching methods is used, like games and guest lectures to help you apply the learned method in practice. Personally, I found this very helpful in preparing for a real job.
