About the course
As a student, you receive a two-year personal budget that you can use to design your own curriculum. The personal budget amount depends on your specialization. In the academic year 2016-2017 the personal budget ranges from €3000 to €4000 per year for students in their first and second year of study.
Your personal budget may be used for taking lessons with professors at Fontys as well as with external professors and artists. This allows you to take lessons with multiple inspiring artists who are leaders in their field and can help you take the next step in your career.
If you wish you take lessons with an artist who teaches elsewhere you can use your budget to do so, even when the artist is based in another country. A cellist, for instance, can choose to have lessons with a cello professor in Paris as part of the Master’s programme, by using her personal budget. Similarly, a musical theater vocalist can follow lessons with a teacher based in London.
A minimum of 30% of the personal budget should be used for lessons at Fontys, while up to 70% of the budget may be used outside the school.
- Course structure
Group classes (cultural entrepreneurship, music philosophy, artistic research and education) are usually held on Tuesdays from 11:00 to 14:00 or Wednesdays. Other lessons are scheduled separately.
As a student, you can choose one of two graduation profiles:
• Performance with focus on education
The Performance profile emphasizes performance during your career as a Master’s student. When you choose the profile Performance with focus on education, you will follow a lecture series on education. In addition, your research project will be education-oriented. As the majority of students usually opt for the Performance profile, the education programme is only offered when at least five students apply for this profile.
Accreditation and reviews
The joint Master of Music programme at Fontys and the Maastricht Academy of Music has been accredited by the NVAO, the organization for accreditation in higher education in the Netherlands and Flanders. The Master of Music leads to the accredited M.Mus. degree. In 2015, the Dutch HBO-Keuzegids Guide selected the Master of Music programme at Fontys as the number 1 in the Netherlands.
