How Eindhoven becomes your second home
During the ‘Week of the International Student’ (November 13th-17th) Bron puts the spotlight on foreign students. Why did they choose to study in The Netherlands and specifically at Fontys? Today’s story: expats Nikolay Mihaylov from Bulgaria and Leke Raifi from Kosovo.
Career opportunities in Electrical & Electronic Engineering:
International Robotic Team
www.teamrembrandts.com: it is our goal to make young people enthusiastic for technology!
Team Rembrandts is an international Robotics team of Fontys University of Applied Sciences department of Engineering. The team consists of talented students recruited from Fontys UAS, but also students from other Eindhoven based schools take part. The team designs and builds its own robots for taking part in several competitions world-wide, resulting in many awards so far!
In Spring 2016 Team Rembrandts has taken part in the FIRST competition in the USA for the 3rd time.
But now, in 2019, On Kingsday, 27 April, in The Year of Rembrandt, 6393km away from home, Team Rembrandts won the FRC World Championship in Detroit! The team consisting of students from Fontys Engineering Eindhoven, Zwijsen College Veghel and Heerbeeck College Best may call itself world champion after managing to leave over 4000 other teams behind them.
During this year’s game, two alliances of three teams competed to score as many points by placing disks and balls at different locations on the field. At the end of the match, extra points were scored by elevating the robots on to platforms at different heights above the ground. The alliance that scored the most points after two and a half minutes won the match.
After the preliminary rounds in February where Team Rembrandts got to the semi-finals twice and won several awards, the team managed to qualify for the world championships. At the world championship, all the qualified teams were divided over 6 divisions. After their alliance took the win in their division, Team Rembrandts competed against the other division winners. In the end, the top two divisions would compete for the title in a best out of three round. And so it happened. Team Rembrandts ended up in the second best division which allowed them to compete for the world title against the number one division. After two nerve wrecking finals matches with one loss and one win, Team Rembrandts’ s division won the third match with a one point differences in their favour. Team Rembrandts became the first European team to win a World Championship.
This is the seventh year the team has participated in the competition and the 6th time they have qualified for the world championships. With this win they have already qualified for the 2020 world championship.
We want to thank every partner, every company, every person that has contributed to the team over the past seven years. This is a world class achievement and we couldn’ t have done it without you! Thank you and cheers to the future!
