At International Communication Management (ICM) in Eindhoven we are crazy about people. Metalheads, rappers, sports fans, travel nomads, lawyers, designers: whoever you are, it doesn’t matter. We are curious about what moves them, curious about their ambitions, interested in their aversions. Because we know that every successful communication project starts with understanding people. Because once we know them, we can do what we’re good at: get these people moving.

About the programme

International Communication is a challenging and ever-changing field. In an international class with students from all over the world, you develop a unique perspective and outlook on the world of communication and branding. You learn to persuade, inform, and connect with people and organisations. Within the programme you work for real companies. And for them, you will be the catalyst that drives change. You do so under the supervision of renowned lecturers with both academic and professional experience in communications.

What are you going to learn?

The world is becoming more and more international, and the Netherlands more and more diverse. This requires new ideas and solutions. You have the passion and drive to think in other directions. You will not only learn everything about communication, branding, brand strategies and how to use online and offline media, but also what your talents are and how to use these to the fullest.

What does your study week look like?

At Fontys, you don’t merely study from books. You always apply what you’ve learned in practice. During lessons lecturers challenge you to ask questions, join discussions and participate in creative brainstorm sessions. Courses

Year 1 teaches you about the wide scope of communication. Each study period focuses on a particular theme in which students work on projects for real clients and companies. The themes are:

  • Media
  • Branding and Activation
  • Reputations and Relations
  • Content and Creation

We work on practical assignments and provide you with the tools, insights and hands-on experience to take on communication projects. After year 1, you understand the terminology and are able to specialise in parts of the field of communication that suit you best.

Year 2 is all about deepening your knowledge. We built on the insights you have gained in year 1, and we will cover more advanced topics, such as crisis communication and brand strategy. In the second part of the year, you will follow intensive courses on storytelling and online communications, and you will take part in a strategy challenge. In year 2, you will transition from a generalist into a communication expert.

Year 3 can be best described as a year of exploration and specialisation. You spend 5 months working as an intern in a company in the Netherlands or abroad. The internship is a great way to customise the study programme, as you can choose the company yourself. We also provide a list of companies we have worked with before.

During the second half of the year, students follow a minor. This allows students to expand their study programme with subjects that are offered at other universities. Students can opt for a minor offered at Fontys, a minor offered by a university in the Netherlands, or a minor offered by one of our partner universities abroad. We have established partnership agreements with universities all over the world.

In your final year, you and a team of students will work as independent communication specialists. You take on projects for real clients and build your portfolio. For each project, you decide whether you will work individually or you gather a team of students to help organisations with their communication issues. Throughout the year, you will be able to show your skills as a communications manager and prove to be ready for the next step in your career.

 

Requirements

Diploma

  • International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB programme)
  • General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) and General Certificate of Education (GCE). Requirements: at least 6 different exam subjects in total, including English and Mathematics. Minimum for the examined subjects is 4 GCSE subjects with grades A*-C or 9-4 plus 2 GCE subjects at AS Level with 2 relevant subjects with results A*-C or 2 relevant subjects on GCE Advanced Level.
  • Any equivalent education (to be compared by our institution)

    Language requirements

    For the English taught programmes, the accepted certificates and the minimum requirements for the English language proficiency can be found here.

    Exemptions

    Some applicants may be exempted from submitting the language proficiency test results:

    • Applicants with a Dutch MBO-diploma level 4/ HAVO diploma / VWO diploma
    • Applicants who have passed one of the secondary education exams (including English as part of the curriculum) as mentioned in the diploma list on the website of the code of conduct
    • Applicants whose prior education was English-taught and who obtained a diploma in one of the following countries: Saint Martin, United Kingdom, United States of America, Australia, New-Zealand, Ireland and Canada (English speaking part only).
    • Applicants with an International Baccalaureate Diploma.

    All other applicants need to submit a proof of English proficiency.

          Diploma

          VWO-, HAVO- or MBO-diploma level 4. Students holding a HAVO diploma with profile "Cultuur & Maatschappij" have an additional subject requirement of Mathematics.

          Costs

          The tuition fees indicator helps you to determine the tuition rate for your situation. The information and tuition rates from this indicator are without engagement.


          Statutory tuition fees and institutional tuition fees

          A distinction is made between statutory tuition fees and institutional tuition fees. Only if you satisfy all statutory requirements regarding your nationality and if you have not yet been awarded a degree, will you be eligible for statutory tuition fees. Via the tuition fees indicator, you can secure an indication of the type of tuition fees that will be applicable in your situation. To do so, please make use of the indicator above.

          Distinctions are made between the following types of Institutional Tuition Fees:

          • Low institutional tuition fees
          • High institutional tuition fees


          Different types of tuition fees and Exemption Regulations

          These different types of tuition fees and the Exemption Regulations are fully detailed in the:

              The amount to be paid may vary in accordance with the following situations:

              • If you have enrolled in more than one course programme (at Fontys and/or elsewhere), it is possible that you may only be obliged to pay one set of statutory tuition fees.
              • If you believe that you may be eligible to pay only the statutory tuition fees on the basis of information that may be unknown to us, please report this to your Course Department.
              • If it later transpires that you do not meet the requirements for statutory tuition fees, you will be obliged to pay the (higher) institutional tuition fees and if this is the case, you will be notified accordingly.

              Some Fontys study programmes offer the Holland Scholarship to their students. Check out the link to see if this study pogramme participates and for more information.

              You might also be eligible for other scholarships not provided by Fontys. These can be found on Grantfinder.nl.

              Paying in instalments

              Collection will take place in a maximum of ten equal instalments on or around the 26th of the month. Depending upon the processing time required after your enrolment, the direct debit may need to be moved to the following month. If so, the amount outstanding will then be divided and added to the remaining instalments to be executed until and including the June instalment.

              If paying the full sum in a single payment

              If you commence your studies on 1 September, the direct debit pertaining to your Tuition Fees will be executed on or around 25 September. If you commence your studies after 1 September, the direct debit will be executed on or around the 26th of the month in which you commence your studies.

              Non EU students

              Incoming Non EU students will receive a payment letter from their study department which must be paid before the deadline. In the following academic years payment can be done by direct debit.

              Non-Sepa

              If you have a Bank account number, of which the bank is not situated in one of the SEPA countries, and you are a national of a country outside the EEA without an address in The Netherlands, then you will receive a paymentletter from Fontys via your course department.

              The Dutch currency unit is the Euro (i.e. abbreviated to ‘EUR’ or ‘€’).

              The average living expenses per month for a foreign student living and studying in Holland are between EUR 900 and EUR 1,100 per month. These living expenses cover rent, insurance, food, public transportation, books, clothing and other general costs. 

              Dutch Immigration Service (IND) requires non-EEA students to proof they have access to € 11,520 per year (€ 5,760 per semester)

              Costs within the first months upon arrival will be higher than all other months due to a housing deposit, intro week and books. Study books are usually bought at the start of the semester and therefore it is wise to reserve and have direct access to an amount at the start of the semester which can cover the price of all study books and the living expenses for the first two months. 

              Before starting your study at Fontys, you must find suitable housing. Unfortunately, it is not easy for international students to find accommodation in the Netherlands due to the housing crisis. Start your accommodation search early. Please be aware that finding a place to live is your own responsibility. However, we are happy to assist in any way we can.

               

              Career opportunities

              Organisations need communication professionals to tell their story and to connect with customers, citizens or people in their target group. This is possible at any kind of organisation, such as multinationals and local companies, but also governments and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Thanks to your internship and graduation year, you will already have 1.5 years of professional experience.

              These are some examples of professions of an ICM graduate:

              • Concept developer

              All applications for our programmes have to be conducted via www.studielink.nl. Studielink is an online portal that allows applicants to apply and maintain their registration whenever they want to.

              The application process may differ for EU and Non-EU students, please read below what applies for you. Please note: International Communication Management does not have a February intake.

              Application process

              In order to succesfully apply for the International Communication Management programme, please read and execute the following steps carefully:

              1. Apply through Studielink.nl before August 1st.
              2. After your ID has been verified you will receive an automatic generated email (please check your spam folder) with your Fontys account and login details.
              3. Fill in the mandatory questionnaire: Fontys Study Choice Check.
              4. Send your documents (pdf files only) to studycommunication@fontys.nl.
              1. Certified copies of your (secondary school) diploma and grades list: in the original language and in English (translated by an authorized person). In case you have not received your diploma yet, please send us your most recent certified grade list.
              2. Proof of English proficiency
              5. Receive email about your admission.
              6. Start looking for accommodation as soon as possible.
              7. Take care of digital authorization through Studielink for payment of tuition fee (possible from mid May). The actual payment will only be in September after you have been fully enrolled).
              8. If you have sent a temporary grade list before, please send the final diploma and grade list before August 15th.
              9. You can find all information about the start of your studies at Fresh at Fontys (updated regularly).
              10. Be sure to check all important information about living and studying in The Netherlands.
              11. You are expected at Fontys on Monday August 21st. Bring your diploma and grade list or an authorized copy for us to verify.
              12. You will be fully enrolled only after the check of your hard copy diploma on August 21st.
              13. Make an appointment at City Hall to register yourself in Eindhoven.
              14. To receive your student card as soon as possible at your Dutch address after your complete enrolment, please make sure to upload your photo here and change your address in Studielink to your Dutch address.
              15. Classes will start on Monday August 28th!
