Hind about studying at Fontys Mechatronics Engineering

Student stories: read the story of student Hind! She tells her experience about the study: what does she like most, how does she experience studying in the Netherlands and what does she find most difficult?

Why did you choose to study mechatronics?

"I decided to study in Eindhoven first. My sister studied international business in Eindhoven, at Fontys as well. Years ago, I visited her and I liked the city. I knew that I wanted to study in English and Mechatronics seemed interesting. At first, I did not know if engineering was really for me. I went to a high school that focused on humanities. So, I have no experience with technical subjects at al. But with all the projects and subjects that I have had so far at Fontys Mechatronics, I think it is amazing. Especially because you are building a project. You are busy with all the steps of the process whereby, in the end, you can hold something that you have made yourself. I find that very cool!"

How do you like studying at Fontys in Eindhoven so far?

"It has been great so far. I am very happy here in Eindhoven and at Fontys. The most special thing at Fontys are the facilities. The new building is great with all the well-equipped labs. I also like the fact that all the teachers are always ready to help you. You can just walk into a lab and your teacher will help you with whatever you would like to make for your project. I do however miss Italian food a lot!"

What are the biggest differences between Italy and the Netherlands?

Bike lanes! You can ride your bike everywhere here. I feel like riding a bike in the Netherlands is safer than driving a car.

The second thing is how efficiently things are organized here. People are on time. For example, you don’t have to wait for hours if you have an appointment in the hospital. And of course the food. When I first tasted the ‘kroket’, well… I didn’t know what I should think about that haha.

How do you like your student life?

"I like it a lot. Eindhoven is nice and I made sure that I was well integrated with the other international students from the beginning. There are quite a lot of international students here in Eindhoven. You become close really fast because everything is new and all the international students are so far from home."

How did you prepare for your international move to the Netherlands?

"I started riding a bike three months prior to moving here. And I already started looking for a side job when I was still back home."

Would you recommend Fontys to other students?

"Yes, definitely! For example, Fontys offers many activities where you already come in contact with the professional field. There is the 'Meet & Match'-day where you'll be having several 'speed dates' with companies. During these speed dates, you will talk to a company. From there, you can see what you can do for each other. And this is how you slowly but surely build a network."

What are your plans after graduation?

"I would like to do my Master's at the design academy here in Eindhoven. It is a new program called Geo-Design and it looks great. And after that, I don’t know yet."

What advice would you give to future students?

"Go to the introduction week! And I am not just saying so because I organized it last year. I remember my one well, great memories. You make a head start with getting to know your fellow students and Eindhoven. Don’t skip!"
