Visa information

It is important that you know and understand that Dutch regulations about residence in the Netherlands are very strict. In most cases, you will need an ‘authorisation for temporary stay’ (MVV) to even enter the Netherlands. When remaining in the Netherlands for more than 3 months, you will need a residence permit.

Entry visa / MVV

An entry visa or MVV is required for all non-EU/EEA students entering the Netherlands, except for nationals from Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, South-Korea, USA and Vatican City State.

Fontys University of Applied Sciences has an agreement with the Dutch Immigration Service to apply for your entry visa on your behalf. You can no longer apply for your entry visa yourself at your local Dutch Embassy/Consulate.

The application process

  • You receive a letter/e-mail of acceptance from the Fontys Institute of your choice.
  • You will receive an e-mail from Fontys International Office asking for any additional documents required to support your visa application.
  • E-mail the required documents to Fontys International Office for approval.
  • Send the original required documents to Fontys International Office by courier AFTER the documents have been approved via e-mail.
  • Payment of the tuition fee, immigration fee, accommodation fee, insurance costs.
  • As soon as Fontys has received your payment, Fontys International Office will submit your application to the Immigration Service on your behalf.

Please note: Students from Pakistan will be given individual advice about the procedure of their entry v isa by the Dutch immigration Service.

Dutch immigration service (IND)

You can visit the IND website (the Dutch immigration service responsible for entry into the Netherlands) and check the residence Wizard, to see what conditions you must meet, and to see what documents you will need in order to be able to stay in the Netherlands.

Residence permit / VVR

All those who enter the Netherlands with an entry visa (MVV), either a single-entry visa (D visa) or a multi-entry visa (C visa), are required to apply for a Residence Permit (VVR) as soon as possible AFTER arrival in the Netherlands.

The main difference between the application for your entry visa (MVV) and the application for your Residence Permit (VVR) is that you have to sign the application form for your Residence Permit yourself. However, Fontys International Office will guide and support you through the whole process and send the application to the Immigration Service on your behalf.
