Smartest region
If you study or work at Fontys, or come to study here, you will be doing so in the Brainport region Eindhoven, the world’s smartest region!
On 3 June 2011, this region was voted as the world’s smartest region for 2011. The Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) chose Eindhoven from more than three hundred candidate regions as being remarkably smart and as an international example of intensive cooperation and regional development between the government authorities in Eindhoven, Veldhoven and Helmond, business and industry and knowledge/teaching institutions such as TNO, TU/e, Fontys and the HighTechCampus.
As a consequence, this region enjoys a favourable economic climate with every opportunity for open innovation across all sectors, for example technology, food and health. The results are excellent solutions to social problems, solid economic growth, high employment opportunities and good future prospects.
ICF
ICF is an international think tank in the field of economic and social development that each year compiles a ranking of the smartest communities. In this tenth edition of the award, Dublin in the United States of America, Windsor-Essex in Canada and Issy-les-Moulineaux in France were the other finalists, alongside Brainport Eindhoven. The theme for 2011 was health care.
Brainport Eindhoven
Leading technology region Brainport Eindhoven is a breeding ground for innovation and the home base for businesses, knowledge and research institutions of world renown. Together, they develop and produce the technology of tomorrow, capable of contributing to a safe, green and caring society and sustainable economic development for the Netherlands. Based around the Eindhoven region as its core, Brainport is the hub for a network that extends across the south-eastern Netherlands and over the nearby international borders. The five spearhead sectors are High Tech Systems & Materials, Food, Automotive, Lifetec and Design.
Mayor van van Gijzel of Eindhoven commented, “We can be proud of this performance. The title generates an enormous boost for further placing Brainport Eindhoven on the national and international map. Brainport Eindhoven, as a leading technology region, is one of the pillars of the Dutch economy. This title underlines the ambition of the Dutch government to become one of the world’s five leading economies.”
